The United States is looking to strengthen its cooperation with Colombia to support security in Haiti, in the face of the country’s ongoing crisis.

At a recent meeting in Miami between the Colombian Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez, and the Commander of the US Southcom, Admiral Alvin Holsey, the two countries confirmed their willingness to work together on a multinational strategy to help Haiti, particularly in terms of defense and security.
Colombia plays an active role in the region, providing training for the Haitian National Police in areas such as intelligence and community policing, and is committed to strengthening Haiti’s defense capabilities.

This cooperation also includes the fight against transnational crime (drug trafficking, human trafficking) and maritime surveillance to limit the supply of weapons and drugs to gangs.

The United States, for its part, has ruled out sending American troops to Haiti, but favors a multinational mission under the aegis of the OAS, in which Colombia could play an active part. The common objective is to support Haiti’s stabilization through a regional approach and strategic partnerships, while promoting institutional development and economic cooperation.
