In a speech to the State Legislature, Bichotte Hermelyn-herself the daughter of Haitian immigrants and chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party-highlighted Haiti’s profound global legacy as the first free Black republic and its ongoing influence on democracy, culture, and innovation.
The resolution expands the celebration of Haitian Flag Day (May 18) into a month-long recognition of Haiti’s historic and modern contributions, honoring figures like Jean Baptiste Point du Sable and Catherine Flon, as well as contemporary leaders in the arts, politics, and public service. Bichotte Hermelyn also acknowledged the resilience of Haitian Americans and called for increased support for Haiti amid its current humanitarian crisis, urging federal action on immigration relief and sustainable aid.
She closed her remarks by emphasizing unity and justice, stating, “Ayiti pap peri. Haiti will not perish. Let us celebrate the Haitian community for its past victories and its ongoing fight to create a better world for all”.
