On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC) held a spectacular tribute ceremony at the fabulous Hotel Montana to honor the incredible memory of the renowned Haitian writer, poet, playwright, painter, musician, and intellectual, Frankétienne. This event brought together a remarkable group of family members, government officials, friends, and collaborators of the celebrated author of “Dézafi,” the groundbreaking first novel written and published in Haitian Creole.
About Frankétienne, born Jean-Pierre Basilic Dantor Franck Étienne d’Argent on April 12, 1936, in Ravine-Sèche, Haiti, was a pivotal figure in Haitian literature and culture. He was the son of a white American father and a black Haitian mother and grew up in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Port-au-Prince2. Frankétienne co-founded the spiraliste movement, a Caribbean surrealist aesthetic that influenced many writers. Literary Contributions Frankétienne’s most notable work is “Dézafi,” published in 1975.
This remarkable novel uses the metaphor of zombification to critique the Duvalier regime. It symbolizes the oppression of Haitians under the regime and suggests that liberation can only occur when the people awaken from their subjugation. Despite its significance, “Dézafi” initially had limited impact due to widespread illiteracy in Haiti at the time.
Legacy and Tributes Frankétienne’s contributions to literature and art have earned him international recognition. In 2010, he was named an Artist for Peace by UNESCO, and he received France’s Order of Letters. His work continues to inspire new generations of artists and writers. The tribute ceremony by the MCC is a testament to his enduring legacy in Haitian culture and literature.
