- Increased Violence: Since February 24, MSF teams have observed a surge in violence in Haiti, resulting in a higher number of wounded individuals and greater medical needs. Clashes between armed groups and the police have intensified, leaving civilians in the crossfire.
- Control by Armed Groups: Approximately 85% of Port-au-Prince is under the control of armed groups, making movement dangerous for residents.
- Medical Response: From February 24 to March 2, MSF’s Turgeau emergency center treated 314 patients, 90 of whom were direct victims of violence, which is double the usual number. The MSF hospital in Tabarre has expanded its trauma capacity from 50 to 75 beds and is operating near full capacity.
- Displacement: Since February 14, attacks by armed groups have forced over 24,000 people to flee their homes in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area. The International Organization for Migration estimates that over 180,000 internally displaced people are living in more than 140 sites.
- Humanitarian Crisis: MSF has warned that without urgent action, the situation in Haiti will turn into a humanitarian catastrophe. They are also concerned about potential disease outbreaks in camps for displaced people as the rainy season approaches and sanitation conditions worsen.
