Leonel Fernández, leader of the Fuerza del Pueblo party and former president of the Dominican Republic, has accepted President Luis Abinader’s invitation to a high-level meeting on May 14 to discuss the crisis in Haiti and its impact on the Dominican Republic.
However, Fernández emphasized that he will not be a “caboose”-meaning he will not simply follow or give unconditional support to the government. He insisted that the dialogue must result in a true national agreement, with shared ideas, rather than just backing government policies.
Fernández also recalled that he was the one who initially called for a national dialogue on the migration and economic crises linked to Haiti, and he welcomed Abinader’s receptiveness to this call.
