Creole, military tactics, and human rights for new immigration agents

A new cohort of 160 immigration control agents in the Dominican Republic has completed a comprehensive training program aimed at enhancing their operational capabilities while emphasizing respect for human rights and effective communication. The training, led by the General Directorate of Migration (DGM), included military tactics, field instruction, shooting practice, and the handling of non-lethal weapons, ensuring a proportional and efficient response to high-risk situations.

Key Training Components:

  • Military and Tactical Skills: The agents underwent rigorous military training, including field exercises and shooting drills, to prepare for interdiction operations.
  • Creole Language Proficiency: Basic Creole language training was provided to facilitate communication with Haitian immigrants, who constitute the largest immigrant population in the country.
  • Human Rights Emphasis: The program placed significant focus on human rights, particularly the dignified treatment of vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, older adults, and children in irregular migration situations.
  • Emergency Response Training: Officers were trained in first aid, emergency care, and rescue protocols, equipping them to handle life-threatening scenarios with both firmness and humanity.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the growing migratory pressure in the region, driven by the crisis in Haiti, while ensuring that immigration enforcement aligns with constitutional and legal standards. The newly trained agents are expected to strengthen the DGM’s operational capacity and contribute to a more humane and effective immigration policy.
