On Feb. 20, 2025, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem partially vacated the July 1, 2024, notice that extended and redesignated Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

The announcement amends the period of extension and redesignation of Haiti for TPS from 18 months to 12 months, with a new end date of Aug. 3, 2025, and makes a corresponding change to the initial registration period for new applicants under the redesignation, which will now remain in effect through Aug. 3, 2025.

By Federal Register notice, the Department of Homeland Security has extended through Aug. 3, 2025, the validity of certain Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) issued to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries under the designation of Haiti.

If you are currently a TPS beneficiary under the Haiti designation and you have not yet re-registered for TPS under the most recent extension, you must submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status to keep your TPS.

It is important to timely re-register during the re-registration period and not wait until your EAD expires. If you wait to re-register, it could cause gaps in your employment authorization documentation.

On June 28, 2024, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas announced the extension and redesignation of Haiti for TPS for 18 months, from Aug. 4, 2024, through Feb. 3, 2026.

Recent decisions and implications
The Trump administration has recently taken steps that could affect Haitian migrants, including announcements of deportations and a tightening of migration policies. This is causing concern among migrant rights advocates, who fear an increase in deportations and worsening precariousness for Haitians living in the United States.

Extension of TPS
For TPS to be extended beyond August 2025, a favorable decision by the current administration is required. Currently, TPS holders must renew their work permits before the deadline to avoid any interruption in their status.
Discussions around TPS for Haiti remain crucial, as the humanitarian situation in Haiti continues to be worrying, with millions of inhabitants suffering from hunger and other crises.
