Markenzy Lapointe, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, has announced his resignation effective January 17, 2025, three days before Republican Donald Trump is sworn in as the next president.
Lapointe, the first Black lawyer to serve in this position, presided over a post-COVID-19 office that cracked down on various types of fraud and corruption. When Lapointe steps down, he will be temporarily replaced by his first assistant, career federal prosecutor Michael Davis, who is known for his role in the crackdown on the Cocaine Cowboys.
Eventually, Lapointe will be replaced by a Trump nominee, likely a lawyer with ties to the conservative Federalist Society.
