Haitians in Mexico have increasingly embraced what they call the “Mexican Dream,” as thousands have opted to build lives in Mexico rather than pursuing the traditional “American Dream.”

This change has been caused by a few things. First, there are more immigration restrictions in the U.S. Second, there are more economic opportunities in Mexico. Third, Mexico is welcoming migrants.

Here are some important things to know about Haitians in Mexico:

Migration Patterns: Many Haitians came to Mexico after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the political unrest that followed. At first, they tried to enter the U.S., but they were stopped because of strict immigration rules, including the end of a special status that allowed Haitians to live in the U.S. (Temporary Protected Status, or TPS) in 2016. This forced many to stay in Mexico.

Economic Integration: They have found work in various sectors such as construction, hospitality, car washing, and factory jobs. Some have even started businesses like restaurants and beauty parlors, learned Spanish, and become part of the local community. Many send money back to their families in Haiti.

Community Building: Haitian migrants have built vibrant communities in cities such as Tijuana, Mexicali, and Mexico City. They have also formed soccer leagues, enrolled in universities, and married locals, contributing to cultural exchange and creating Haitian-Mexican families.

Challenges: Despite these successes, many Haitians face hardships such as low wages, informal jobs, and living in poor conditions. Some live in temporary camps or crowded housing while trying to be stable.

“Mexican Dream” Concept: The term reflects the opportunities Haitians see in Mexico, such as the ability to get work permits, humanitarian visas, and the chance to build a life without the fear of deportation. This is in contrast to the increasing difficulty of achieving the “American Dream” due to stricter U.S. immigration policies.

This shows that Mexico is a place where migrants can find stability and opportunities.
