Cancellation of the National Carnival in Fort-Liberté: Town Hall Announces a Communal Carnival

The Haitian government has canceled the official National Carnival in Fort-Liberté, initially scheduled for March 2-4, 2025. The Ministry of Culture and Communication made the announcement on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. This decision follows growing concerns about security and other challenges in the city.

Background

Fort-Liberté, a historic city and the administrative capital of the Nord-Est department, was chosen to host the National Carnival after a four-year hiatus. The event was expected to boost the local economy and celebrate Haitian culture with the theme “Haiti Debou” (“Haiti Standing”), reflecting the resilience of the Haitian people. A pre-carnival celebration occurred on February 2, featuring music, parades, and Madigras, attracting visitors and boosting tourism. The Fort-Liberté Carnival Committee had set an ambitious budget of 536 million gourdes (approximately USD 4.1 million) for the event, planning to improve local tourist sites and infrastructure while strengthening security measures.

Reasons for Cancellation

The government’s decision to cancel the National Carnival reflects concerns about the city’s readiness to host such a large event, citing infrastructure, security, and logistical coordination as top priorities. Rising insecurity in Haiti also contributed to the decision.

Communal Carnival Plans

Despite the cancellation of the National Carnival, the city of Fort-Liberté is planning a local alternative.
